Plenary Session: SafeTALK
"Suicide prevention is everyone's business"
NYSPEP invites you to join Melanie Puorto, Director of Suicide Prevention Initiatives for the NYS Office of Mental Health for a 3-hour SafeTALK training. SafeTALK prepares anyone over the age of 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first air resources. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety. As a SafeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, you will be better able to: move beyond common tendencies to miss, dissmiss or avoid suicide; identify people who have thoughts of suicide and apply the TALK steps to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid, intervention caregivers.

Afternoon Workshop Choices

How to Find Your Voice and Be Effective:
An advocacy training with Jenn O'Connor, Senior Policy Associate for the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy.  Everyone is an advocate-whether in your own life, for a particular cause, or as part of your profession. You will learn: the rules for advocating versus lobbying, how to be a Five Minute Advocate, and who to talk to and how (strategies for talking to parents, providers, policymakers, and the media).

NYSPEP Parenting Educator Credentialing Orientation:
