Peace First is hiring a talented curriculum leader

Peace First
Content and Curriculum Specialist

Background:
Across almost two decades of work in three cities, Peace First has been teaching young people the critical skills of conflict resolution and civic engagement through our innovative social-emotional learning curriculum. Our program receives consistent and positive results, from which we have developed a powerful network of deeply committed stakeholders, a strong understanding of our impact, and a rich array of content for teaching peace  In the next year, we will launch a highly visible national initiative to celebrate young people who are creating lasting change in their communities: The Peace First Prize.  We will leverage this opportunity to scale our program and create a national movement around youth peacemaking.

About Peace First Institute:
The Peace First Institute leads the design, development, and implementation of our program through technical assistance, product development, quality assurance and evaluation.  The Peace First program is composed of three core components: 1) curriculum and resources for teaching peacemaking skills to young people 2) strategies and frameworks for adults to lead institutional “climate change” to create safe and effective school and community environments for young people and 3) effective social messaging to shift public perception about young people as problem-solvers and celebrate youth peacemaking as a vehicle for positive change through the Peace First Prize. The emerging scale strategy involves broadening the ways in which Peace First delivers these program components through three principal channels:

  • Continued implementation and measurement of our program through intensive school partnerships in our directly-managed Regional Innovation Centers that serve as model demonstration sites and sources of evaluation for program success;
  • Digitized tools and resources for teaching peace made widely available to educators through an online platform and supported with training and technical assistance services;

  • Work with VISTA team to build our knowledge resources, launching Peace First’s efforts to build a knowledge bank and resource centers that houses our content as well as other’s;

History of Camp Erin

Camp Erin is named in memory of Erin Metcalf of Woodinville, Washington, a remarkable young woman who developed liver cancer at the age of 15. Karen and Jamie Moyer met Erin through Make-A-Wish. Erin had a compassionate heart and when she was hospitalized she often expressed concern for the other children there as well as their siblings, who sometimes received little attention.

In 2000, when Erin died at the age of 17, Jamie and Karen Moyer wished to honor Erin’s memory and her caring spirit. Acknowledging her love of children and her desire to help others, the Moyers felt that a grief camp for children would be an appropriate tribute. The first Camp Erin was established in Everett, Washington in 2002.

Summer Volunteer Experience

Parsons Child and Family Center is looking for summer volunteers for a summer camp, Camp to Belong, the last week in August, along with 2 training days to work up in Lake George at Camp Gingakook sponsoring a camp for children who are in foster care.

The focus is for siblings who are separated to reunite during a week at camp together. It was started in 1995 by a former Foster child who remembers what it felt like to be separated from her siblings. There are several around the country and in Australia as well. They will be taking 50 foster children for the whole week. Parsons has asked me to try to spread the word to our students as they are looking for 25 overnight volunteers. It would involve staying for the week, plus an additional 2 days of training. Also looking for volunteers that can help out on a daily basis for a particular activity, such as Birthday party. I can't think of a better place for our students to volunteer and have a fantastic experience. There is a conflict of the start of classes, but perhaps we could work around it. Last year several of our students volunteered at Camp Erin with Community Hospice and they loved it.
