I've been getting lots of questions about the CAS program for school counseling students
Once you graduate from the St. Rose program, you will have accrued 48 credits and are eligible for provisional certification. NYS requires you to get an additional 12 credits of graduate coursework (and 2 years of pupil personnel experience) within 5 years of graduation to be eligible for your permanent certification.
There are several ways to get these 12 credits. You can spread them out, take them in one semester, take 2 at a time, etc. You can apply for the 12 credit CAS through St. Rose and receive an extra notation on your transcript that indicates you have completed the registered NYS Advanced Study in School Counseling that we offer (sometimes students want this on their resume and some school districts might pay more for “extra” certificates) http://www.strose.edu/academics/schoolofeducation/counseling/advancedstudyinschoolcounselingcas/article1082
You can also take these 12 credits at another institution offering either a CAS that is registered and approved by NYS or take classes independent of a CAS as long as the classes meet the NYS criteria (come from a registered program, graduate level counseling coursework, etc) Visit http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/home.html for more information.
If you are interested in applying for the CAS, the deadline for Spring admission is October 15. Students who are planning to continue on with their studies at St. Rose need to have an application in to graduate admissions by that date. The application can be found here: http://www.strose.edu/graduateadmissions and http://www.strose.edu/graduateadmissions/applying
