John Dau to speak at Siena Sept. 20th

The Damietta Cross-Cultural Center will be celebrating Peace Week during the week of Sept 19 – 23. Our focus this year will be Refugees Awareness. I would like to inform you that the Center has invited John Dau, one of the lost boys from Sudan to be our guest speaker during Peace Week. John is one of the main characters in the movie "God Grew Tired of Us" which Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman took part in the production. The event will be on September 20th, 2011 at 7pm in the Sarazen Student Union, Room 241. This event is open to Public.

The movie has won a few awards including -
The Sundance Film Festival 2006 - "Grand Jury Prize: Documentary" and the "Audience Award" in the "Independent Film Competition: Documentary" category.
The Deauville Film Festival in France and the Galway Film Festival in Ireland – Best documentary.
The Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award by the International Documentary Association in 2007 - Christopher Dillon Quinn.

Here is some info about Mr. John Dau. He was born in Sudan and moved to the Kukuma refugee camp in Kenya at a very young age in 1992. He has gone through war, violence, starvation and walked more than 1000 miles to escape from Sudan. John has moved to Syracuse, NY in 2001 with the assistance by the Catholic Charities International. He has shared with me that he didn't go to school until age 17. During his early years in Syracuse, he has worked for UPS, McDonald and other places up to 60 hours a week while going to Onondaga Community College to complete his Associate's Degree and BA at Syracuse University. The Sage Colleges seek a Mental Health Counselor effective August 22, 2011. Responsibilities of this 3 day per week (10 month) position include providing intake, assessment and counseling to students, assist students in crisis, serve as a resource to the college community in regard to mental health services.

Qualifications: Master’s in Psychology or Social Work, appropriate license, experience in a college counseling setting, and the ability to work with diverse populations.


Salary dependent on qualifications and experience. Candidates from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

GED and Media Tutor (Volunteer Position)

Description:

We are seeking highly motivated and personable individuals to join our team at the Technology, Help & Education Center. As a GED and Media Instructor, you must be willing to undergo a weeklong training session to prepare yourself for the rigors of tutoring the people of South End. We are searching for individuals from all walks of life to learn the skills necessary to help others obtain their GED, teach basic computer concepts, and work the front desk.

Qualifications:

-Any major/background is welcomed

-Basic knowledge in Science, Math, Social Studies, English, Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint

-Six to twelve month commitment preferred

-Ability to work at least`10 hours/week preferred

-Must provide own transportation to/from site
